Significance of Konark Dham

Konark (19.8921° N, 86.0912° E) is an ancient pilgrim and divine historical place in India situated in the district of puri, Odisha state and important place of the east coast of Odisha, which is treated as an important place of sadhnakshetra (spiritual practice). It is approachable either from Bhubanshwar (66 km) or from Puri (38 km north-east) by good motorable roads. The place is famous for the Sun temple, popularly known as black pagoda, the notable marvel of architecture and one of the finest monuments of the man-kind ever produced. The monument speaks of the Surya cult which was one important religious cult of Puri district in particular and of Odisha in general. The name ‘Konark’ is evidently derived from the name of the presiding deity Konark which means the Arka(Sun) of Kona(Corner). Hence ‘Konark’ means the corner-sun, the latter presumably being in relation to ‘Trikona’ or ‘Tikana’on the bank of holy river Kusabhadra. Incidentally, the Sun temple is located on the agnikona of the Odisha province. The history of Konark Sun Temple and sun worship goes as far back as the 19th century BC. The Konark Sun Temple, however, was built by GajapatiLangulaNarasingha Deva of Ganga dynasty (1238-1264), was anincredible master-piece of architecture of medieval world.

The legends embodied in Kapilasamhit, in the Madalapanji and in the PrachiMahatmya, take the sanctity of Konark back to mythogical times. In the Kapilasamhita the place has been referred to as Maitreyavana or Mitravana where Samba, the son of Lord Krishna has been advised to propitiate ‘Surya’ to get rid of leprosy. The Varahapurana mentions that Samba installed one of the images of Surya at Udayachal, the mythical mountain of sun-rise i.e. at Konark. . It is believed that worshipping the sun was started by Samba. As the legend goes, Samba built a sun temple in the 19th Century BC at the end of his 12-year long worship of the Sun at Maitryeavana. This devotion cured him of leprosy, he was suffering from. As a tradition in the state of Odisha, India, this auspicious day is also celebrated as Samba Dashamion the 10th day of Shuklapakshyain the month of Pausha. On this day mothers pray to LordSurya for the better health of their children.

However, it had acclaimed as one of the principal kshetras called Arkakshetra or Padmakshetra. The sun temple of Konark marks the highest point of architecture of Kalingan style.
